Week 1 – Discussion 1 for EDU695: MAED Capstone

 

Diversity Through 21st-Century Teaching and Learning

 

 

 

There is a broad range of experiences brought to the school every day by cultural, linguistic, and ethnically diverse students. These unique diversities compel the development and use of different teaching strategies to target each student as an individual. In this discussion, you will explore the concept of supporting diversity through 21st-century teaching and learning. This discussion is also intended to support your performance on the Week One Assignment.

 

Initial Post – Select three of the five prompts below, and then discuss how the Framework for 21st Century Learning can be applied to each prompt using specific examples of the actions you would take to apply the framework. Your response to each of the three prompts should be one paragraph.

 

  • Analyze how you can maintain high standards and demonstrate high expectations for all ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse students in the classroom.

  • Reflect on ways in which you will choose culturally relevant curriculum and instructional materials that recognize, incorporate, and reflect students’ heritage and the contributions of various ethnic groups.

  • Discuss how you would differentiate instruction for the inclusion of various learning styles.

  • Reflect on ways in which you would modify instruction for special education students.

  • Discuss how you would modify instruction to meet the needs of students who are designated second language learners.

    This posting is about Quality participation in the discussions!
    Every session someone will want to do the absolute MINIMUM in the discussion and get full credit.

    Discussion board expectations: This section of the course is where we roll up our sleeves and talk about things.
    I will post something every day, to keep the discussion lively and interesting. I ask that you post at a     minimum twice a week
    to include replying to your fellow classmates postings. I will be watching for     quality postings that support the weekly subject and demonstrate
    that you have completed the readings. Should you chose to site a reference, I ask that it be in APA format and     do not use Wikipedia as a reference.
    There are many peer reviewed articles within the Ashford online Library system and I encourage you to utilize them.    NOTE: If I see where you are responding to your classmates for the FIRST TIME on the Last DAY of the week (Monday) I will take that to mean you do not want to have a conversation with your peers but rather you are just trying to post for the sake of posting. It will call in to question the ‘quality’ of your participation in the discussion and you could lose points. NOTE: If you post on the last day of the week (Monday) use that time as a follow up to the follow up, or to wrap up a conversation. Do not use it to start a conversation with an initial response to your peers (that is not quality participation)! Now go be GREAT! 🙂

    The discussions should be more than something you do to get participation credit. They really should be conversations that take the learning further and builds on the readings, ESPECIALLY with your Peers! We are unique that in an online setting your classmates are from across the Nation. You can share ideas from Alabama to Alaska, but not if you wait unit the last day to even inquire about what’s happening with your peers!

    Class, I appreciate the comments so far,  and it has me thinking about how we came to be here in this classroom, studying about education!

     Let’s turn the discussion towards our own background and experiences; When I look at my own background and experiences, when it comes to learning and have to wonder; How does this affect me? How does this influence my ability to learn and perceive certain issues and ideas? So take that one step further, if it affects me as a student how much more will those experiences and backgrounds of my students impact their learning experience? I have learned that most students/people learn through hands on so providing them with the opportunity for the hands of will help reinforce what is being taught.  

    How much value is there in looking back on our own experiences as students?  What if the experience was negative, how can we as educators make that a positive in our approach to teaching?
